What is this site NOT about?Last updated ~2005.06
A - Marketing Hype! There's a good article Anthony Calfo wrote on reefkeeping which addresses Marketing Hype. Feel free to read about it here: Reefkeeping 2005-02 - Reef Trendy? by Anthony Calfo
I'm not here to impose my beliefs on you, but my take is: Do you like the zoa and/or price? Get it! Do you NOT like the zoa and/or price? Don't get it! Pretty simple, eh? Again, this is how I roll - to each their own of course! But this site is NOT about marketing hype!

Why?Last updated ~2005.06
A - Cause I havn't seen anything like it! Often times on various reef boards the question is asked: What does ______ zoanthid look like? Or, is this a ___________ zoanthid? Well, now we'll have a place to guide those references too easily! w00t! Back to top
Where can we talk about zoanthids?Last updated 2006.10.15

How do I submit my zoas to ZoaID.com?Last updated ~2005.06
It's really quite easy! But there are a few criteria to submitting Zoas to ZoaID.com...
- You must realize and agree that this site is not for marketing and/or rasing the value/price/hype of a Zoa. See the other sections of this FAQ for more info.
- Respectfully, remember that this isn't a contest... This isn't about who has the best zoas, the most zoas, or the most zoas on ZoaID.com. Not to deter anyone from submitting pics to ZoaID.com - just reminding everyone that a bombardment of 20 zoas just to 'be on ZoaID.com' is not what we're after!

- Permission from the photographer to use their photo. This is a MUST. We have received permission to use ALL photos on ZoaID.com from the original photographer. If you find your photo on the site and did not give permission to use it, please contact me! There is a link to Contact Us on the left-hand menu.
- The name of the photographer so we may give credit to the shutterbug - preferably a ReefCentral or Zoosrus or _______ handle. For instance, my name is 'Jeremy', my handle is 'whodah'. I'd prefer that you gave me 'whodah' to use. Keeps it more fun!
- The name of the Zoanthid - whether it's a new name or an existing name, please let us know what it is or what you'd like it to be.
- The original namer of the Zoanthid - again, so we can give credit where credit is due. And again, we'd prefer a ReefCentral or Zoosrus or _________ handle as opposed to a 'real name'.
- The lights the photo was taken under - I.e. 50/50 PC or 14K MH, etc.. Please give details. An answer of 'T5' is not near as good as 'T5 - 2 x Super Blue Actinic and 2 x 10K daylight'.
- The origin of the Zoanthid - where did it come from? I'm not talking about 'from Bob's Pet Barn', but like: Tonga, Fiji, Caribbean, etc.. If you don't know, no biggy. I suspect there will be a lot of unknowns. But if you happen to know, please tell us!
- Story behind the Zoanthid - My favorite example is the 'Safecracker'. The story is: "The person who the namer obtained the zoanthid from was a professional Safe Cracker!" No story? No biggy.... But if you have one, let me know!
- And lastly - the pics!! A 'flash shot' is now required to accompany your tank-lit shot. That is to say, you must submit a pic of your Zoa utilizing your flash as well as your tank lights for them to be added to ZoaID.com. This is in place for future features on ZoaID.com! As you can see, all of the photos on ZoaID.com are top notch! Most of them are closeups as well. Feel free to submit multiple shots of the same zoanthid - but we do want closeups! This helps distinguish them. A mother colony shot and a close up shot is perfect. We'd prefer a closeup to a mother colony shot. If the pics are blurry, we'll kindly request you to re-shoot them and send you to some photo taking tips available here: http://www.zoaid.com/index.php?name=FAQ&id_cat=2#q14 I hate to sound so 'picture snobbish', but it's really quite easy to take a good quality pic following those simple techniques. You don't have to have a $2k camera setup either - a typical run-of-the-mill digital camera will suffice!
You can submit them using the 'Contact Us' link on the left-hand menu. Back to top

Who decides what the zoas are named?Last updated ~2005.06
Good question... Everybody I suppose? Most of the zoas that started this site off had names that were 'generally accepted' on the zoanthid forums. We'll see where it goes from there! Back to top
What happens when there are multiple names for a zoanthid?Last updated ~2005.06
I'll list the 'primary' name first, and then 'aka' names afterward. I need your help though... This is all being done by my own personal research atm! If you see a discrepency and can point to a source to back it up, please let me know!!! There is a link to Contact Us on the left-hand menu. Back to top

Can I use your picture on my (site|banner|club|brochure|advertisement|fl yer|etc.)?
Last updated 2006.02.24 You'll have to ask the individual photographer that question! ZoaID.com's photos are submitted by Zoanthid photographers from all around the world. ZoaID.com has been granted permission to post these pics by each photographer. However, permission was NOT granted to allow reproduction.
In my experience, just dropping the photographer a line requesting use of their shots is generally all it takes for non-profit type organizations as long as credit is given to the shutterbug. (Reef clubs come to mind!) But again, that's up to each photographer. By clicking on the thumbnails of the pictures, the photographer's name will be displayed beneath the pic. Usually this is a ReefCentral or ZoosRUs handle name. Your best bet is to hit the photographer up via that information and seek permission.

Why is this site so anti-eBay?Last updated 2006.04.04
It's not - in fact, that's one of the many ways to get some Zoanthids!
What ZoaID.com is against is the exploitation of this site to create hype, demand, drive up cost, or drive up the market for Zoanthids. Come on guys, this site is a showcase of all types of Zoanthids. It takes no more than a simple request and a couple of shots to add a Zoanthid to this site. (Use the 'Submit a Zoa' link on the right-hand menu.) If someone tells you that their Zoanthid is "uber rare because it's on ZoaID", then that is simply not true. Buyer beware of the seller perpetrating their 'must have rare ZoaID zoanthid' or using pics off this site that they do not have permission to do so with.
Bottom line: Like the zoanthid? Bid on it! Don't like it? Don't bid on it! But please don't allow people who are exploiting this site to trick you out of more money. Back to top
